Inside Vanderbilt’s Asness Summit: Rethinking conflict in an age of asymmetry
Vanderbilt University’s Asness Summit on Modern Conflict and Emerging Threats examined how advances in technology—particularly artificial intelligence, drones and cyber capabilities—are reshaping conflict and allowing smaller actors to challenge more powerful nations. This year’s theme was “The Shadow of War, The Illusion of Peace: National Security in the Age of Asymmetry,” and explored the shifting balance of power, technology and diplomacy in our complex era.Read More
Donors Diana Grant, BA’85, and Daniel Frey are committed to advancing mental health support at Vanderbilt. The couple have pledged $2 million to strengthen and build new pathways for health and wellbeing support—including emergency funding for students, wellness programs and community events designed to help students support one another on a daily basis across academic, extracurricular and residential settings.Read More
Every summer, before arriving on campus, Vanderbilt’s incoming class gets an assignment. Last summer, for the first time in 16 years, that task changed. Instead of reading a book, 1,600 first-year students-to-be were asked to go into their community and practice the art of dialogue—to talk to someone who could deepen, broaden and shift their understanding of the world. Then, they had to write a short reflection about the encounter. The result was perhaps not what you’d expect from homework assigned for summer break: more than 90 percent of the students surveyed found the experience meaningful and enjoyable.
