1.   Acclaimed journalist warns against indifference in MLK Day keynote; students step up for day of service
    Byron Pitts, an Emmy Award-winning journalist, author and co-host of ABC’s Nightline, warned against the dangers of becoming indifferent to helping others and challenged members of the Vanderbilt community to see their potential to change the world through service when he delivered the university’s 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Series keynote address on Monday evening. 2.   Vanderbilt announces new program in Asian American and Asian diaspora studies
    The College of Arts and Science has launched a new undergraduate program in Asian American and Asian diaspora studies, including both a major and a minor, for spring 2023. Housed in the Department of Asian Studies, the program aims to provide students with a more comprehensive knowledge of Asian diaspora and perspectives, Asian and U.S. history, and race relations in the United States. 3.   Vanderbilt Unity Lab launched; applications open for program trainers
    To cultivate transformational connections across campus, the Vanderbilt Project on Unity and American Democracy will launch the Vanderbilt Unity Lab this spring. The Unity Lab will equip VU community members with the tools necessary to strengthen the bonds of cultural affinity and promote civil discourse. 4.   Story Photo Blair Big Band wins honors at Jack Rudin Jazz Championship
    Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music’s Blair Big Band placed in the top four among elite college jazz orchestras from across the nation at the third annual Jack Rudin Jazz Championship. 6.   ‘The Intersection of Civil Rights and Environmental Justice’ featuring Yale’s Dorceta Taylor is Jan. 26
    Vanderbilt’s Department of Sociology will present a lecture by Dorceta Taylor, senior associate dean of diversity, equity and inclusion and professor of environmental justice at Yale University, on Thursday, Jan. 26, from noon to 1 p.m. in Alumni Hall, Room 202. 7.   REGISTER: Unity Project to host ‘Upholding Democracy in the Age of the Big Lie’ with co-authors Major Garrett and David Becker
    The Vanderbilt Project on Unity and American Democracy will host CBS Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett and David Becker, executive director of the Center for Election Innovation and Research, to discuss their book, The Big Truth: Upholding Democracy in the Age of the Big Lie, on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. at the Scarritt Bennett Center. 8.   ‘An Evening of Art and Hip-Hop’ at NMAAM Feb. 2; submit art through Jan. 26
    Vanderbilt’s Student Center for Social Justice and Identity, Bishop Johnson Black Cultural Center, Peabody College and Blair School of Music will host “Afro-ARTivism: An Evening of Art and Hip-Hop” on Thursday, Feb. 2, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the National Museum of African American Music’s Feature Gallery. The event will honor the artistic contributions of Black Vanderbilt and Nashville community members while highlighting the concept of Black Resistance, the 2023 national theme of Black History Month.  [ Read More ]
     
     
9.   Data Science Institute seeking students for project using AI models to better understand new languages
    The Data Science Institute is working with Elliott McCarter, senior lecturer in Asian studies, on a new project this semester to bridge language acquisition gap through deep learning.
