An invitation from the provost and dean of students to reflect on recent tragedies

Provost Susan R. Wente and Dean of Students Mark Bandas invite the Vanderbilt community to come together Monday, July 11, at the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center to reflect on the violent deaths last week of two black men in Louisiana and Minnesota and the subsequent violent deaths of five police officers in Texas, and to recognize the impact of recent violence on our community. Vanderbilt joins President Obama, nation in lowering flag for Dallas police officers

Vanderbilt students, faculty and staff gathered on Alumni Lawn July 8 to observe the lowering of the American flag to half-staff as a mark of respect for Dallas police officers Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael J. Smith, Brent Thompson and Patrick Zamarripa, who were killed in an attack July 7.

Clifford Hofwolt, long-serving Peabody faculty member, has died

Clifford A. Hofwolt, a longtime professor of science education whose tenure at Peabody College predated its merger with Vanderbilt, died at his home in Nashville on July 5. He was 74.


VICC researchers to study high breast cancer incidence, mortality rates among African American women

A cancer research consortium headed by investigators at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and two other institutions have received $12 million in federal funding to help determine why African American women die at a higher rate and have more aggressive breast cancer than white women.
