On Thursday, May 6, the Center for Teaching invited the members of the Vanderbilt community to join them as they celebrated teaching across the university. Highlights of the event included remarks from Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Richard McCarty, the awarding of certificates to our eight Teaching Certificate program graduates, and jazz music provided by Blair School of Music students.

Patricia and Rodes Hart Professor of Psychology and Human Development Bruce McCandliss highlighted his on-going work with educators from across campus who meet regularly to discuss integrating contemplative practice into their teaching and their students' learning. The group's work on this initiative led the development of the Spring 2010 Commons seminar "Innerspace: Explorations of Meditation Practice for Self and Society," which McCandliss co-led with Linda Manning, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Psychologist at the Center for Integrative Health.

Eight Teaching Certificate participants were honored at this year's ceremony: Allison Atwood (Cancer Biology), Christina R. Kaighen (Theological Studies), Katherine Moynihan (Cardiovascular Medicine), Eve Proper (Leadership, Policy, & Organizations), Alisha Russell (Cancer Biology), Brad L. Teague (Teaching & Learning), David B. Vaught (Cancer Biology), and Hillary Hager Carter (Cell & Developmental Biology). Carter offered reflections on her experience in the Teaching Certificate program citing the importance the program played in helping her discover the pedagogical literature and in providing her with the skills and insight to become a more affective teacher.
