Teaching Forum Vol 2:2 Spring 2000 Newsletter

  • Diversity in the Classroom: Beyond Race and Gender. Three members of the Vanderbilt community discuss diversity issues at the University.

  • From the Editor. Christine Dungan suggests that it's important to remember that issues of diversity are not merely abstract. "Diversity is, essentially, people, and as such is an inherently personal issue."

  • White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack. Peggy McIntosh, associate director of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, visited Vanderbilt and gave a series of presentations, including the Women's Center's annual Margaret Cuninggim Lecture, on Feb. 28 and 29, under the partial sponsorship of the Center for Teaching. This excerpt from her working paper "White Privilege and Male Privilege: A Personal Account of Coming to See Correspondences Through Work in Women's Studies" (© 1988) is printed with permission.

  • The Teaching Exchange. In this column, we highlight innovations in teaching across the campus. For this issue, we decided to use a teaching case that actually occurred in a Vanderbilt classroom and asked two professors to respond by sharing their thoughts about how to handle such a situation.

  • Notes from the CFT Library: Gender and Race in the Classroom. MTF Sharenda Holland Barlar reviews two videotapes available in the CFT library: Race in the Classroom and Women in the Classroom . The videos were produced by Harvard University's Derek Bok Center for Teaching adn Learning.
